Iconic tourist night to be organized twice monthly in Hoi An Ancient Town

Iconic tourist night to be organized twice monthly in Hoi An Ancient Town

Authorities in central Vietnam will double the number of performances of an iconic program in UNESCO-recognized Hoi An Ancient Town to cater to burgeoning tourist demand.

The People’s Committee in the central province of Quang Nam have announced that they are poised to increase the frequency of the “Dem Pho Co” (Ancient Town Night) program from once to twice a lunar month.

The program, which is currently held in the ancient town on the 14th day of every lunar month, offers tourists a wide array of alluring activities including dining at cuisine sections, setting free lit flower lanterns on the town’s Hoai River, and strolling through a night market.

The committee has decided that the program will be held twice monthly, on the first and 14th days of every lunar month, starting next month.

Today, January 16, is the 26th day of the eleventh month in the lunar calendar.

The organizer will then take into consideration the possibility of running the program once every week based on the program’s appeal.

The committee also assigned the local Culture-Sports Center to diversify the program’s content and improve its appeal as a hallmark tourist product.

Improvements are to be made regarding sound and lighting systems and local peddlers’ attitudes and price listing.

The “Dem Pho Co” program was introduced in 1998.

Over the past 16 years, over 200 nights have been organized to attract a large number of local and international tourists.

According to statistics released in October 2014 by the Office of Trade and Tourism of Hoi An City, which is home to the ancient town, the city saw an increase of roughly 263 percent in the number of tourists spending time at local hotels every month in and around the time “Dem Pho Co” was held.

In 1999, Hoi An Ancient Town was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO for being a well-preserved example of a Southeast Asian trading port from the 15th to 19th centuries, and for housing buildings with a unique blend of local and foreign influences.

Since then, the culturally rich town has been voted one of the top tourist destinations in the world by several major tourism magazines.

Quang Nam Province received nearly 3.7 million visits in 2014, a seven percent year-on-year rise and almost four percent higher than the target, officials said at a meeting in late December last year.

The province expects to welcome over 3.85 million visitors this year.

Free Wi-Fi for 2015 Tet Flower Street in HCMC

Free Wi-Fi to be available at 2015 Tet Flower Street in HCMC

Visitors to the annual Flower Street in Ho Chi Minh City during the coming Lunar New Year (Tet in Vietnamese) will for the first time be able to use Wi-Fi for free, the company that will install public wireless Internet hotspots at the event said Wednesday.

The free Wi-Fi access is intended to enable visitors to stay connected while touring the festival, also known as the Nguyen Hue Flower Street, the Saigon Postel Corporation (SPT) said on its website.

SPT will install hotspots for its S-wifi network on Ham Nghi Street in the city’s downtown, where the Book Street fest will also be running, along with the flower festival, as well as at parks including Tao Dan, 23/9, Gia Dinh, Le Van Tam and the flower street in Phu My Hung.

The Ho Chi Minh City Flower Street has been held annually since 2004 on Nguyen Hue Street, but will be relocated to Ham Nghi this year as the former is closed for the construction of a subway system.

The S-wifi system will offer unlimited Internet bandwidth to help festival-goers access the Internet with their mobile devices, according to SPT.

“Local residents and international tourists can feel free to share their photos and videos captured at the festival with their friends online,” the company said.

The free Wi-Fi project was approved by the municipal administration and Department of Information and Communications, after acknowledging the huge demand for public Internet access in the southern metropolis, according to SPT.

The number of smartphones in Vietnam has risen seven times over the last three years, while the number of people accessing the Internet via smartphones has also increased fourfold in the same period, SPT said, citing a report by market research firm AC Nielsen.

The free Wi-Fi will be available as of February 2, whereas the flower street is slated to open at 7:00 pm on February 16 and close at 10:00 pm on February 22.

Visitors will be required to log in with the username S-wifi.vn on the network named S-wifi to be able to use the complimentary service, SPT noted.

The flower street has grown into one of the city’s highlights during Tet – the Southeast Asian country’s largest traditional holiday – and receives millions of tourists, including foreigners, each year.

This year’s flower street is themed “Vietnamese Identity and Spirit.”

The first day of the Lunar New Year falls on February 19, but festive preparations and the celebratory atmosphere will go on one week before and after that date, as per tradition.

Terraced cafés near Ho Chi Minh City airport

Terraced cafés near Ho Chi Minh City airport offer close-up views of airplanes

In the past 10 years or so, many residents in Ho Chi Minh City have taken to sipping coffee at terraced cafés near Tan Son Nhat International Airport for gorgeous views of aircraft and air traffic activity.

Such venues, also dubbed “aircraft cafés,” have mushroomed in recent years along several streets near the airport, such as Quang Trung Street in Go Vap District and Hong Ha Street in Tan Binh District.

Unlike most cafés, which open throughout the day, aircraft cafés are generally open only in the early morning and late afternoon, as their owners tend not to use eaves for shade to maximize views of the airport.

Customers, who come here in groups of friends, families and couples, take great delight in seeing planes taxiing, landing and taking off in proximity while sipping coffee and other drinks.

“I have run my terraced café for almost ten years now. There were few such cafés back then, while many more have opened since,” said Tran Thi Ngoc Boi, owner of Dao Nguyen Café, at 101 Quang Trung Street, Go Vap District.

Ho Van Tien, the manager of Diem Hen Café, at 97 Quang Trung Street, also said his café targets a large number of clients who want to indulge in the pastime.

The cafés which line the street are typically packed in the evening, particularly around 8:00 pm.

Customers usually have to wait for a long while, particularly on weekends, for seats which offer the best panoramas of the airport.

The cafés are usually housed in buildings of three to four floors, and offer drinks at affordable prices, ranging from VND20,000 to VND60,000 (US$1-3), thanks to reasonable running costs, as Boi explained.

Furniture is simply styled, but should be weather-resistant, she added.

However, Tien, a real estate agent in Tan Binh District, said ideal terraced venues which offer the best views of the airport fetch even higher prices than those on the ground.

All the café owners reinforce their balconies with steel nets to ensure the safety of their customers, particularly children.

They also hang signs which discourage visitors from littering onto the roofs of neighboring houses.

While most people living near the airport are constantly vexed by the engine noise, customers at aircraft cafés, especially kids, are fascinated by the noise and sight of the aircraft in proximity.

The close distance even allows them to see certain outer parts of the planes during flight quite clearly.

Dang Thi Hien, a customer, said she usually takes her little son, who loves admiring aircraft, to such cafés in her leisure time.

Huynh Kim Muoi added she usually frequents aircraft cafés to relish the views of the planes and the special atmosphere.

Thanh Tam, an office worker, said she and her group of friends choose to go to different cafés for various perspectives of the aircraft and airport.

The sight of flying planes, especially when the “iron birds” are soaring overhead, arouses in her special feelings as if she were about to go away, Tam revealed.

Thu Oanh, another patron of aircraft cafés, said she adores the draughty, spacious environs and the illuminated runways.

Photographers also choose the cafés as locations for aerial photo shoots.

Central coastal Vietnam’s bars rated world's no. 2

Central coastal Vietnam’s bars rated No. 2 in the world

Editor’s Note: Stivi Cooke is based in central Vietnam and has an intimate knowledge of it following six years of living there.

According to a recently published article in We know better than you magazine, the coastal bars of central Vietnam have been hailed for their unprecedented quality, opulence and bargain basement prices. You see, we in the center don’t have the vomitorium – the modern meaning of a bar where people drink until they vomit and then do it all over again. That’s what we call ‘binge drinking’. No, indeedy... we of the center have refinement, class, elegance and a touch of eccentricity to our nocturnal and frequent diurnal consumption of alcohol.

The recent spate of newspaper articles deriding the vomitoria of the far-flung north and wet, damp south have notably excluded and ignored our central coastal sophistication – a touch of jealousy perhaps? Vomitoria, by the way, used to mean ‘exit’ or the lobby of a rich Roman’s villa in ancient times.

For sure, the gaudy, tacky, icky bars of other places can never hold a candle to the sheer preponderance and pervasiveness of our industrious and extraordinarily diverse watering holes.

We have eschewed the rathskellers of the north and south, as infrequent as these basement bars are, in favor of the much beloved and heavily frequented boîtes of late night imbibing accompanied by music and frivolity.

We can boast of the watering holes in far-flung Phong Nha Park, the legendary Phong Nha farmstay being one establishment with the rustic charm and otherworldly heartiness of Aussie hospitality. Along the way south through Hue, there’s the quality lodging of the Hue Backpacker’s, where socializing while guzzling is considered good manners.

Against the twinkling evening lights and belching flames of a bridge Dragon with obvious signs of ingestion problems, Da Nang can sneer at the sheer veneer of those southern grog holes in Ho Chi Minh City. We have the stunning views of the Red Sky bar, The Top rooftop bar at À La Carte and SOHO sweeping across the city and the river. Our esteemed Waterfront restaurant and bar also enlivens the local drinking fraternity with water views making owners in other cities livid with jealousy.

Even our downmarket cantinas display more engrossing, captivating and enthralling merrymaking than either the tired and jaded northern bars or the brash, ecky bars of the south. You can sample the intoxicants of Dimples bar, Lido or the locally popular Lau Chau restaurant while gazing at the passing traffic entertainment and Vietnamese beauties strolling like Parisians along Da Nang beach’s promenade.

Along the way to Hoi An a remarkable bar run by one of the most interesting men in central Vietnam awaits you. Hoa’s place is that often sought-after but rarely found establishment of real relaxation, genial company, wild tales and of course, cold libation. Highly recommended.

Now we all know of the taprooms servicing the tourists in Hoi An and I have to admit they are quite ‘meh’, a mixture of over-pricing and dysfunctional interior design, however gems of alehouses can be found in this quaint yet hustling town. Dive Bar, 3 Dragons sports bar and Phatties Bar at An Bang beach each offer amusement and alcohol without recall to the need for patrons to drink themselves into a vomitable state, thus enabling everyone to chit-chat to their hearts content while quietly informing the bartender of their needs.

So to sum up – you, the proprietors of the north and south, lift your game, I say! Banish these inglorious vomitoria! Bring back refinement and finesse, away with the binge drinking and return to Vietnam’s real drinking lore – the days of friendliness and rice whisky, ‘bia hoi’ (cheap fresh beer) and good company.

Besides... vomitoria are only a trend, right? And no, I have no idea which bars are No.1 in the world.
