Enterprise Singapore expands innovation alliance network to Ho Chi Minh City
Enterprise Singapore has expanded the Global Innovation Alliance network to Ho Chi Minh City, plugging Singapore technology start-ups into the emerging innovation scene in Vietnam.
Launched in 2017, the initiative seeks to create more opportunities for Singaporeans, students, entrepreneurs and businesses to gain overseas experience and collaborate with overseas counterparts.
The involvement of Ho Chi Minh City in the network was formalised at a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signing between Enterprise Singapore, Quest Ventures - a Singapore-based leading venture fund for companies - and Saigon Innovation Hub, an agency under the Department of Science and Technology in the city in southern Vietnam.
The signing took place yesterday at WeWork, a co-working space in Ho Chi Minh City.
Under the MOU, the three partners will organise curated programmes to introduce Singapore start-ups to the innovation ecosystem in Ho Chi Minh City, and connect them to partners, investors and customers in Vietnam.
It will also create more internship opportunities for Singapore students in start-ups and innovative companies in Vietnam.
Targeted to commence in September this year, the first cohort will involve up to 10 Singapore start-ups, with another two runs of the programme expected to take place over the next 12 months.
As part of the Global Innovation Alliance network, Ngee Ann Polytechnic also signed six MOUs with Vietnamese start-ups.
They are: Alley51 Ventures, a venture builder; CoderSchool, a training school for developers, designers and data scientists; ELSA Corp, a start-up for foreign languages; Lazada Vietnam; Quest Ventures; and Saigon Innovation Hub.
Last year, Vietnamese start-ups attracted close to US$900 million (S$1.2 billion) of funding, more than three times that in 2017, said Enterprise Singapore chief executive Png Cheong Boon. "Vietnam is a growing market for technology start-ups and SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises), given the young and increasingly tech-savvy population and strong government support," he said.
The Global Innovation Alliance network now has connections to 11 cities globally.
They are: Bangkok in Thailand; Beijing, Suzhou and Shanghai in China; Berlin and Munich in Germany; Jakarta in Indonesia; Paris in France; Tokyo in Japan; San Francisco in the United States; and now, Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.

VietJetAir opens flights to Singapore
Vietnam’s low-cost carrier VietJetAir launched Friday a route between Ho Chi Minh City and Singapore, Thoi bao Kinh te Sai Gon (Saigon Times) reported.
Seven round-trip flights will now operate every week with each trip about one hour and 50 minutes long.
VietJetAir flights will add 2,520 seats every week to the route which is currently being operated by Vietnam Airlines and Singapore Airlines, according to the report.
The newly-opened route is the airline’s third international route, after HCMC-Bangkok and Hanoi-Bangkok.
VietJetAir now operates 24 domestic and international routes.

Vietnam, Singapore raise ties to 'strategic' level

Vietnam and Singapore have agreed to elevate their 40-year-old relationship into a strategic partnership.
This was confirmed in a joint statement following talks between Vietnamese PM Nguyen Tan Dung and his visiting Singaporean counterpart Lee Hsien Loong on Wednesday.
The two sides have agreed to promote political ties through regular exchanges, economic, agricultural, legal, and cultural ties as well as cooperation in defense and security, health, and education and training.
They will also strengthen ties in banking and finance, communication, IT, transport, tourism, and urban management and development.
During their talks, the two leaders supported the establishment of friendship associations in their countries to promote exchanges between the two peoples.
They hailed the continuing development of their security and defense ties on the basis of the 2009 Defense Cooperation Agreement and the 2006 Transnational Crime Prevention Cooperation Agreement which was extended in 2012.
Dung said Singapore has always been one of Vietnam’s top investors and trade partners.
Bilateral trade last year surpassed US$9 billion and Singapore’s investment in Vietnam exceeds $28 billion.
Lee promised to promote Singaporean investment in Vietnam and also acknowledged Vietnam’s request to enable export of agricultural and seafood produce and garments to Singapore.
The two PMs appreciated the efficient functioning of the four Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Parks around the country, with the joint statement calling them symbols of the mutually beneficial relationship between the two nations, and expressed hope for similar success for the fifth VSIP to be built in Quang Ngai Province.
Lee also met with Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong on Wednesday and President Truong Tan Sang and National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung a day later.
He is set to accompany Dung to the groundbreaking ceremony for the Quang Ngai IP today.
This is Lee’s fourth visit to Vietnam.

Singaporean, S. Korean carriers to fly to Da Nang daily
Korean Air and Singapore’s Silk Air will add four more flights to Da Nang City this October, following the schedule expansions of domestic carrier Vietnam Airlines and other foreign airlines earlier this year.
Korean Air will have three more flights per week from Seoul from October 27, and Silk Air will add a Thursday flight from Singapore to its current schedule from October 31, making the two carriers fly every day to Da Nang, Vietnam's third-largest city, Balcony Media Group said recently in a press release Friday.
According to the release, the flight additions will satisfy more demand from Australian, the UK and other European countries with Silk Air and from the US with Korean Air.
It also said the three flights by Korean Air will boost the number of flights from Seoul to Da Nang every week to 14 – including those provided by South Korea’s Asiana Airlines and Vietnam Airlines.
Vietnam Airlines commenced two new flights to Da Nang from Seoul and Cambodia’s Siem Reap July 1, while Hong Kong-based Dragonair on March 28 started flights between Hong Kong and Da Nang every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday and added a weekly Saturday flight to the route from July 6.
Currently, three Chinese airlines – China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines are also offering flights from Beijing, Shenzhen and Shanghai respectively to Da Nang, the release said.

Singapore and Vietnam launch strategic partnership
Singapore and Vietnam formally elevated their relationship to that as strategic partners on Wednesday, an agreement which deepens their ties on the political, economic, defence, security and international fronts.
Under the strategic partnership agreement, the two Asean members will promote high-level bilateral exchanges, with direct communications between their leaders. The strategic partnership was launched by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who is in Vietnam on a three-day official visit, and his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Tan Dung.
In trade, both countries have agreed to step up cooperation in sectors such as transport, infocomms technology, finance and banking. They have also agreed to look into other promising areas like cruise tourism, commodities trading, healthcare and agriculture. Vietnam and Singapore are also working to increase air traffic between the two countries and with the rest of the world.
For defence and security, Singapore and Vietnam will increase their cooperation in military and training exchanges, amongst other areas. The two countries will also explore tie-ups in areas such as tourism, healthcare, legal systems and education. In addition, they reaffirmed their commitment to bring about an integrated Asean Community by 2015, and to enhance the region's role in the global community.

There are opportunities abound in Vietnam for Singapore companies, Second Minister for Environment and Water Resources and Foreign Affairs, Ms Grace Fu, said in Hanoi on Thursday.
And with the official launch of a strategic partnership between the countries on Wednesday, Singapore is in a good position to tap on growing industries such as manufacturing, financial services and hospitality.
"This is a country with over 90 million population, it has a very young population," said Ms Fu, who is accompanying Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on his official visit to Vietnam.
"Labour cost is very low, (they have a) very hardworking population, very eager to learn and with their greater linkages to the world through the various free trade agreements as well as the TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) for example, we see this as a great potential for us to tap."

Singapore will elevate bilateral relations with Vietnam to that of a Strategic Partnership as both countries marked the 40th anniversary on Thursday of the setting up of diplomatic relations.
President Tony Tan Keng Yam in a congratulatory letter to his Vietnamese counterpart, Truong Tan Sang said bilateral ties between both countries have taken great leaps forward in the past 40 years.
Singapore is one of Vietnam's largest investors and people-to-people links between both countries are robust and expanding.
Dr Tan hopes that both sides can use the Strategic Partnership to take their relations to greater heights.
In his letter to his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Tan Dung, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said the Strategic Partnership will inject fresh impetus to the partnership.
It will also pave the way for even stronger relations in the future.
Mr Lee said the four successful Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Parks reflect their excellent economic ties.
He added that he looks forward to opening the fifth such park during his visit to Vietnam this September.
Foreign Minister K Shanmugam also sent a congratulatory letter to his Vietnamese counterpart Pham Binh Minh.
Mr Shanmugam said Singapore and Vietnam work closely at various regional and international fora including ASEAN.
Both countries share many common interests, including the importance of strengthening ASEAN to maintain regional peace and stability.
He said economic cooperation continues to grow, buttressed by the Singapore-Vietnam Connectivity Framework Agreement.
Both sides are working more closely than ever in a wide range of areas such as defence, education, and arts and culture.
Mr Shanmugam said with the elevation of bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership this September, relations are poised to move to a higher level.
He looks forward to working with Mr Nguyen to strengthen relations.

Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Vietnam Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung have lauded the strong and multi-faceted bilateral relationship between their two countries, which will be elevated to a Strategic Partnership in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of bilateral relations this year.
They noted the good progress on the Strategic Partnership Agreement negotiations and looked forward to the signing of the Agreement during Prime Minister Lee's official visit to Vietnam later this year.
On the economic front, both Prime Ministers noted the extensive bilateral economic ties, and agreed to strengthen bilateral trade and investment linkages.
Meeting in Singapore, both Prime Ministers also exchanged views on regional and global issues.
They discussed recent developments in Southeast Asia and reaffirmed their commitment to work closely to promote ASEAN unity.
On the developments in the South China Sea, they noted the importance of the early commencement of discussions on the Code of Conduct (COC) in the South China Sea between ASEAN and China.
The two leaders reiterated their commitment to the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations.
They noted that the TPP, when completed, would help to advance regional economic integration.
Prime Minister Dung called on and was hosted to lunch by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the Istana on Friday afternoon.
Prime Minister Dung also called on President Tony Tan Keng Yam at the Istana on Friday.
During the call, President Tan and Prime Minister Dung reaffirmed the excellent bilateral ties, in particular the robust economic and people-to-people linkages.

Vietnam Television opens news bureau in S'pore
Vietnam Television (VTV) officially opened its news bureau in Singapore on Wednesday.
Its Singapore bureau is one of its eight bureaus in the world.
VTV also signed a cooperation agreement with Singapore media company MediaCorp.
Both sides will promote the exchange of news and television programmes and provide technical support to each other's correspondents.
They will also co-produce television shows and documentaries, as well as share expertise and management experiences through working visits.
Tran Binh Minh, president of Vietnam Television, said: "The cooperation agreement between VTV and MediaCorp will bring about more information, more fresh updates, and information for our audience.
"We hope that after signing this agreement, we will actively exchange views and experience."
Debra Soon, managing director of Channel NewsAsia at MediaCorp, said: "As Vietnam TV opens its bureau in Singapore, we would like to congratulate them as this also coincides with our relaunch next week.
"It is interesting and very heartening to note that more Asian broadcasters are getting together, to tell original stories of Asia, which is what we feel is necessary.
"The Vietnam TV cooperation will allow us to have another reference point for viewers in Asia, and allow us to report events as it happens in Asia, from Asia, from people who understand Asia best even better."
Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Communications and Information Sim Ann noted that the agreement is a by-product of a memorandum of understanding signed between Singapore and Vietnam in 1998.
She said the setting up of VTV's bureau is a boost to relations between Singapore and Vietnam, and is the first in a series of initiatives to mark 40 years of bilateral diplomatic relations.
Ms Sim Ann said it is also an affirmation of Singapore's position as a regional media hub, as well as its attractiveness as a strategic location with excellent infrastructure.
More than 40 media organisations have bureaus in Singapore.

Vietnam Television (VTV) officially opened its news bureau in Singapore on Wednesday.
Its Singapore bureau is one of its eight bureaus in the world.
VTV also signed a cooperation agreement with Singapore media company MediaCorp.
Both sides will promote the exchange of news and television programmes and provide technical support to each other's correspondents.
They will also co-produce television shows and documentaries, as well as share expertise and management experiences through working visits.
Tran Binh Minh, president of Vietnam Television, said: "The cooperation agreement between VTV and MediaCorp will bring about more information, more fresh updates, and information for our audience.
"We hope that after signing this agreement, we will actively exchange views and experience."
Debra Soon, managing director of Channel NewsAsia at MediaCorp, said: "As Vietnam TV opens its bureau in Singapore, we would like to congratulate them as this also coincides with our relaunch next week.
"It is interesting and very heartening to note that more Asian broadcasters are getting together, to tell original stories of Asia, which is what we feel is necessary.
"The Vietnam TV cooperation will allow us to have another reference point for viewers in Asia, and allow us to report events as it happens in Asia, from Asia, from people who understand Asia best even better."
Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Communications and Information Sim Ann noted that the agreement is a by-product of a memorandum of understanding signed between Singapore and Vietnam in 1998.
She said the setting up of VTV's bureau is a boost to relations between Singapore and Vietnam, and is the first in a series of initiatives to mark 40 years of bilateral diplomatic relations.
Ms Sim Ann said it is also an affirmation of Singapore's position as a regional media hub, as well as its attractiveness as a strategic location with excellent infrastructure.
More than 40 media organisations have bureaus in Singapore.
